Pat Robertson Is Still Out There
I guess I should have known that he was due for some more bad advice or absurd statements. Pat Robertson just can’t refrain from making outlandish remarks or contradicting the Bible, notwithstanding that he presents himself as being a knowledgeable Bible teacher.
While visiting Robertson’s CBN website today I noticed that Pat had a question and answer page. I thought it would be interesting to see what kind of sage advice Pat was sharing. A young man had asked, “when is it right to go to war?” Robertson then proceeded to impart some of his frequently dispensed wise misinformation. He confidently stated that there are just wars. And, he added that America’s current ”calculated response” following the 9-11 attack against our nation, is an example of a “just war” that fulfills the necessary biblical grounds. Pat then referred to a Bible passage, Romans 13:1-4, as supposed biblical proof.
Either Mr. Robertson, the famous Bible teacher, is ignorant concerning the Scriptures or he’s being intentionally dishonest. The passage he quoted has nothing to do with war. It deals with individual citizens’ obligation to obey the laws of their government, or to expect punishment from the rulers of that government, which in the case of Rome could include beheading with the sword for certain crimes committed by Roman citizens. Because he didn’t have a legitimate scripture to answer the question of this sincere young man, he simply gave him one that was taken totally out of context in order to justify his own unbiblical stance regarding the Iraq war.
Jesus, of course, told us to love our enemies and do good to them, not attack and bomb them. The Apostle Paul said that we are not to repay evil for evil or try to avenge ourselves, but to leave vengeance to God. When Peter tried to use his sword against Jesus’ enemies, Jesus told him to put it away and said that all who use the sword will perish with the sword. And, when Jesus stood before Pilate He said that if His Kingdom was of this world His servants would fight, but Jesus added that His Kingdom is not of this world, so His servants do not fight.
Robertson and other Evangelical leaders try to turn Jesus into a war monger with their just war lie. Moreover, they deceitfully manipulate scriptures to bolster their false teaching. Another way they do this is by reminding us that God ordained wars in the Old Testament era for Israel, which was His Old Testament Church so to speak. Once again they practice deception. While it is true that God did ordain wars in the Old Testament for Israel, they were only fought to acquire, defend or regain a specific piece of land that God had supernaturally promised to Abraham. Israel’s wars were not fought to police the world. America is not fighting in Iraq to defend land that God had supernaturally promised to the Bush Administration. America is attempting to police the world. This is neither biblical or just.
I guess I should not have been surprised to find new misguided rhetoric on Pat’s website. This is the same guy that advocated assassinating the Venezuelan President, Hugo Chavez. Remember, Robertson is a gospel minister. He is supposed to be involved saving lives, not snuffing out life. However, this type of statement was not a first for this “hit-man preacher”. In the August 18, 1986 edition of the New York Magazine, Pat Robertson stated that almost all great builders of our nation have been Christians. He added that “termites” (non-Christians) have now taken over the institutions that Christians built. He then declared that the time has arrived for a godly fumigation. Fumigation is done to kill termites. If the non-Christians are the termites, what was Robertson suggesting?
Maybe sometime soon I’ll check out Pat’s website again to catch another wacky episode of the “Pat Robertson Show”.
